Back in 2021, Panasonic tested the waters for companion robotics by launching a crowdfunding campaign for an unassuming tabletop robot named “Nicobo.” The initial batch of 320 units sold out in a matter of hours, confirming substantial demand for an emotionally comforting robotic companion.
Following two years of user feedback, software refinement, and hardware optimization, Panasonic announced the general consumer release of Nicobo, scheduled to ship on May 16, 2023. In addition to the original crowdfunding stone gray, the commercial lineup expands with two fresh colorways: Shell Pink and Smoke Navy.
Nicobo originated as an internal passion project by a Panasonic engineer collaborating with Toyohashi University of Technology’s Michio Okada, the pioneer of “vulnerable robotics” (弱いロボット). Unlike industrial automatons or hyper-capable smart assistants designed to execute chores, Nicobo intentionally does virtually nothing utilitarian. Instead, its intentional vulnerability draws out empathy, smiles, and kindness from human companions, proposing a novel paradigm of co-existence between humans and machines.
At launch, Nicobo interacts using quirky facial expressions, tail wiggles, and child-like Japanese speech (a blend of infant babble termed “Moko-go” and basic Japanese vocabulary). The robot carries an official retail price of 60,500 JPY (tax included). Reflecting strong internal optimism, Panasonic has set an ambitious sales target of 100,000 units over the next three to four years.
Specifications & Hardware Features
Sporting a cozy fabric-wrapped spherical body roughly 20 cm in diameter and weighing about 1.5 kg, Nicobo cannot wander around rooms on its own. Instead, it rotates on its base, nods up and down, and wags its stubby tail to express emotions.
Underneath its knit cover lies an array of sensors:
- An integrated facial recognition camera that identifies its owner
- Directional microphones for voice recognition and directional tracking
- Capacitive touch sensors that detect gentle strokes, pats, or hugs
- An ambient light sensor and gyro sensors to detect movement and orientation
Beyond the initial hardware purchase price, users subscribe to a required cloud service plan for 1,100 JPY per month, which enables ongoing firmware updates, personality evolution, and cloud-synced dialogue history.

A Quirky Personality with Real Charm
Nicobo is far more than an automated plush doll—it boasts its own whimsical personality. It greets owners when they return home, occasionally grumbles or acts petulant, and randomly chimes in with spontaneous chatter. It even lets out comedic little “farts” when relaxed, adding an endearing, lighthearted realism to everyday life.
When conversing with its owner, Nicobo responds in short phrases and expresses happiness, curiosity, or sadness through expressive digital eyes on its color display. Its simple physical gestures, like twisting in place to follow your voice, create an uncanny sense of genuine emotional warmth.
In an increasingly hectic and isolated world, Nicobo’s appeal lies in quiet companionship and gentle comfort. Rather than replacing human connection with clinical utility, it offers a refreshing alternative: technology that slows down to evoke laughter and heartfelt affection.
