In many smartphone apps, computer software, and web interfaces, designers use icons instead of text to fit into limited screen space. The familiar “settings” function, for example, is usually represented by a gear icon “⚙️”.
There is also a text symbol (Text-Symbol) that is often used in place of “settings” or “admin”. Its advantage is that it avoids emoji compatibility issues and saves resources (an emoji character takes 32 bits, or 4 bytes), and a plain text system can also save processing time. The icon looks like three vertical dots: ”⋮”.
