With Taiwan’s summer electricity pricing taking effect in June, keeping homes cool during sweltering heat without facing skyrocketing power bills requires practical energy-saving strategies.
The Miaoli District Office of Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) recommends several proven practices to optimize cooling efficiency:
- Select High-Efficiency Appliances: Choose air conditioning models with a superior Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) or Tier 1 energy efficiency certifications, which consume significantly less power for the same cooling capacity.
- Optimal Installation Placement: Install indoor and outdoor units in well-ventilated locations shielded from direct sunlight, mounted at least 75 cm above the floor to promote unobstructed convection.
- Ideal Thermostat Setting: Keep thermostat settings between 26°C and 28°C. Pair your unit with an electric circulating fan to distribute cooled air evenly throughout the room.
- Block Solar Heat Ingress: Install blackout curtains, solar blinds, or heat-reflective window films to dramatically cut down incoming solar radiation.
Additionally, environmental protection authorities emphasize the importance of regular cleaning and maintenance. A sudden drop in cooling efficiency is frequently caused by accumulated dust on filters and heat exchanger fins. Clogged filters not only strain the compressor, but also degrade indoor air quality, aggravating allergies and respiratory discomfort.
For routine maintenance, use a vacuum cleaner to remove loose dust before gently washing filters with running water. Allow the filters to dry thoroughly in the shade before reinstalling them.
