The Bloody Duet of Catholicism and Christianity
In my view, the shrewdest brand makeover in the world is not some tech giant rising from the dead, but rather Catholicism and Christianity (Protestantism), with their thousand-year lineage. These two sects, steeped in over a millennium of bloody history, can still sit comfortably on the moral high ground today, harvesting believers worldwide with the slogan “God loves the world.”
On the objective premise that “God does not exist,” this absurd drama spanning a thousand years is essentially an ideological packaging gradually unfolded by Catholicism and Christianity in their struggle for land, wealth, and dominion, through political collusion and self-invented rituals and ceremonies.
Religion was never a purely spiritual refuge. From the moment it merged with the Roman Empire’s political power in the fourth century AD, it transformed into a heavily armed political entity.
Catholicism: Medieval Monopoly of Violence and Massacre
The vast majority of the dark crimes in Western history bear the brand of Catholicism.
Once the Roman Catholic Church merged with feudal power, it became a thoroughly military-political entity. The so-called “God loves the world” became, under the Catholic blade, an excuse for extremely exclusionary slaughter:
- The Crusades: In the name of “God’s will,” the Catholic Church launched several crusades, carrying out unspeakable massacres in Jerusalem, sparing neither women nor children, leaving rivers of blood.
- The Inquisition and the stake: To maintain Catholicism’s monopoly on power, any scientist, thinker, or commoner who questioned dogma was branded a heretic and burned alive.
- Accomplice to colonial expansion: Behind the overseas expansion of Spain and Portugal was the full support of the Catholic Church. In Latin America, Catholicism forcibly expanded its religious territory at the cost of destroying local civilizations and slaughtering tens of millions of indigenous people.
In Catholic history, the disobedient were not “people,” and thus did not deserve “God’s love.”
Christianity: The “Protestant” Myth Was Not More Merciful
Many modern people mistakenly assume that Christianity (Protestantism), after the Reformation, became more civilized. In fact, in slaughter and exclusion, Protestantism was in no way inferior to Catholicism.
The Reformation brought not peace, but more brutal infighting.
- The Thirty Years’ War: Catholicism and Protestantism, fighting for control of Europe, erupted into a thirty-year melee. The German region lost nearly a third of its population, with both sides holding up crosses, shouting “God loves the world” while hacking each other’s people into mincemeat.
- Calvin’s theocratic terror: The Protestant theologian Calvin established a theocratic rule in Geneva, likewise erecting the stake and cruelly burning to death the scholar Servetus for opposing his doctrine.
- The catastrophe of North American indigenous peoples: Protestant Puritans, full of “justification by faith,” arrived in North America on the Mayflower, proclaiming they would build God’s “City upon a Hill” while committing genocide against Native Americans with smallpox blankets and guns.
The “Chicken Soup for the Soul” After Losing Its Fangs
Today, whether it is the Catholic Vatican or the Protestant churches on every street, all preach tolerance, peace, and understanding.
This transformation is no miracle, but because their instruments of violence were confiscated by modern secular civilization.
The Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution dismantled Catholicism’s Inquisition, while modern law stripped Protestantism of the possibility of establishing a theocratic state. Having lost their armies and law enforcement powers, these two factions faced an unprecedented existential crisis.
To survive, these two religions launched the largest crisis PR campaign in human history: downplaying historical atrocities as the “imperfection of human clergy” to preserve “God’s perfection”; and repackaging doctrines once full of exclusion and control as the “emotional value” modern people desperately need.
The Ongoing Present: Bloodshed and Holy Slaughter That Never Went Out
Yet this “peaceful” brand packaging is mere decoration. In the ongoing present, that unextinguished bloody and holy slaughter is playing out in more covert ways.
When the wreckage of missiles stamped “Made in USA” is wretchedly dug out of the ruins of an Iranian girls’ school destroyed by geopolitical conflict, the chain of power behind it is clearly visible: in the Oval Office, crowds of American evangelical pastors gather behind the president, laying on hands in prayer, granting “God’s blessing” to these transnational arms deals and military slaughters.
This is the ultimate division of labor in modern theocratic politics: the United States develops, manufactures, and sells these high-tech weapons capable of instantly shredding civilians and students, then hands the button to geopolitical proxies to press. When something goes wrong, it is the proxy’s “military miscalculation”; when counting the money, it is “economic prosperity” granted by God to the free world. The imperial machine draped in Christian garb releases the tools of slaughter while drowning out distant wails with the sound of prayer.
The same absurdity is pushed to its extreme in today’s Judeo-Christian system of shared origins. When the Israeli regime conducts indiscriminate military operations against Palestine and around Iran, destroying countless civilian facilities, its leadership unabashedly cites the biblical name of the destruction of the “Amalekites.” This is no longer modern defense, but a deliberately activated “theocratic purge.”
Under the shelter of “sacred names” and the promised land, innocent lives torn apart by the torrent of American-made steel remain, in the modern theocratic narrative, merely the necessary cost of “cleansing pagan filth.”
Conclusion
This is the most ironic part: Catholicism and Christianity use modern universal values to perfectly cover up their dark history of rising through bloody expansion.
Bloodless hands turn the pages of biblical dogma; bloodstained hands sign arms orders. As long as it serves the interests of the core ruling bloc, a bloody massacre spanning a thousand years can still be perfectly rationalized today.
This is not compassion. It is merely two obsolete regimes that lost their military force, making the shrewdest and most hypocritical business transformation to adapt to a civilized era.
