The New York Institute of Photography (NYIP), founded in 1910 in New York, USA, is a for-profit educational institution offering three basic courses to students who want to enter the photography field: the Professional Photography Course, the Photoshop Course, and the Fundamentals of Digital Photography.
In addition, NYIP offers the following courses for various types of photographers, so those who need them can strengthen specific professional skills on their own, including:
- Professional Photography Course
- Fundamentals of Digital Photography
- Portrait Photography Course
- Photoshop for Photographers
- Wedding Photography Course
- Photojournalism Course
- Travel Photography Course
- Nature & Landscape Photography Course
- Video Making Course
- Business for Photographers
- Graphic Design Course
In 2005, a China student program was established in mainland China, aiming to promote NYIP’s famous distance-learning interactive photography courses to more local photographers there. On the Chinese website we can find the syllabus of the Professional Photography Course, and through this list everyone can understand an overview of how professional photographers are trained.
NYIP Professional Photography Course Study Overview
- Unit 1: The photographer’s eye, the camera, lenses, how to use your camera.
- Unit 2: Capturing the image, exposure, an overview of digital processing, filters, expanding your eye.
- Unit 3: Natural and available light, artificial light, electronic flash and studio flash, travel photography, landscape and nature photography.
- Unit 4: Basic portrait lighting, studio portraits, location portraits, children’s photography and pet photography.
- Unit 5: Photojournalism, fashion photography, macro photography, astrophotography and copy work.
- Unit 6: Advertising and still-life photography, architectural photography, glamour and nude photography.
NYIP’s courses use distance learning; in practice, the main study methods are mailed textbooks and online videos. You can also consult online and submit photos to the school’s professional photographers for evaluation and advice. Since you cannot actually attend an instructor’s lectures, cannot ask questions in real time, and must find a studio environment and models yourself, whether it is worth the money is something to consider for yourself.
The tuition for the China student program is RMB 6,980 for a 66-week course (about NT$32,108); the tuition for the New York headquarters course is US$629 (about NT$18,870) paid in one lump sum, or US$59 per month, totaling US$899.
