For today’s Japanese design feature, we’ve chosen the snack packaging box of the original Momotaro “Kibidango” made by the traditional Japanese sweets shop “Koeido” in the Okayama and Kurashiki area.
The first image below is a three-dimensional view of the top of the Kibidango packaging box. The two interlocking sides were originally meant to be sealed with a cute sticker, but it’s been torn open (one side is even broken off) — just imagine it yourself.

Below is a side view of the Kibidango packaging box. A whole row of cute big-head designs also appears on the outer wrapper of each dumpling inside. All the chibi-style big-head portraits relate to the Momotaro story — the design is quite interesting.

Below is the first impression that greets the eye after opening the box. It’s actually quite likable — you can feel a full sense of vitality.

After flattening the outer packaging box, you get the following two consecutive images. From these you can understand how the overall outer packaging design should be planned.

Below is the other side, including information disclosure and graphic layout, both of which can serve as references.
I personally quite like that whole row of cute chibi images that wrap around the outer box without repeating the design. And the images of Momotaro and the ogre are additionally enlarged, presenting an opposing stance on the packaging box that conveys an even stronger sense of story.
