HTTP 301 and HTTP 302 are two different redirect status codes in the HTTP protocol, used to instruct the client browser to take different actions when requesting a web page. The main difference between them is:

  1. HTTP 301 Moved Permanently:
  • When the server returns HTTP status code 301, it tells the client browser that the requested resource has permanently moved to a new location.
  • After receiving the 301 response, the client browser will automatically send all future requests directly to the new URL.
  • Search engines will update their index, pointing the old URL to the new URL.
  1. HTTP 302 Found (Temporary Redirect):
  • When the server returns HTTP status code 302, it tells the client browser that the requested resource has temporarily moved to a new location.
  • After receiving the 302 response, the client browser will request the new URL, but will not automatically update bookmarks or the search engine index.
  • Search engines will usually continue to treat the old URL as valid.

Therefore, the key difference is that 301 is a permanent redirect, while 302 is a temporary redirect. Which redirect status code to choose depends on the website administrator’s intent. If you want to permanently move a page to a new URL, you should use 301. If you only want to temporarily redirect a page to a new URL, you can use 302.

It should be noted that although 302 is a temporary redirect, some search engines may treat it as permanent, depending on the search engine’s algorithm and processing method. Therefore, website administrators should weigh their choice of status code according to their intent and needs.
