According to the Centre for Food Safety of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Center for Food Safety, The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region), a sample of the Malaysian-imported “Duria Musang King Durian Ice Cream” was found to contain Escherichia coli (Escherichia coli) exceeding the legal limit, at 1.5 times the prescribed maximum.

Under Hong Kong’s “Frozen Confections Regulation” (Cap. 132AC), any frozen confection offered for sale must not contain more than 100 E. coli organisms per gram; violators face a maximum fine of HK$10,000 (about US$1,287) and up to 3 months’ imprisonment. As a result, the Duria durian ice cream has been banned from shelves and sealed in Hong Kong.

The “Musang King Durian Ice Cream” sold by Duria is a 70-gram product imported from Malaysia. The importer is Goldgate Company Limited, the batch number is 230206D17, and the expiry date is February 5, 2025.

According to the centre’s report, the E. coli content detected in the “Duria Musang King Durian Ice Cream” from two ice cream samples was 250 organisms per gram, exceeding the legal upper limit of no more than 100 E. coli per gram. The centre has notified the relevant authorities of the violation and has temporarily revoked the product’s sales approval.

Given that the excessive bacterial content of this Musang King ice cream product is likely due to environmental safety concerns in the Duria factory’s production process, we recommend suspending consumption of ice cream produced by this factory until a solution is proposed in Malaysia. We will continue to monitor this matter and provide the latest information.

Finally, we advise everyone that when purchasing or tasting “Duria Musang King Durian Ice Cream,” please ensure the product you choose comes from a reliable source and has passed inspection by the relevant authorities. For products already purchased, please check whether they match the batch number specified by Hong Kong and consider discontinuing consumption.
