Following an altercation between veteran media commentator Zhou Yukou and internet celebrity Holger Chen (Gym Director), Zhou publicly lashed out at the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), demanding they sever all ties with Chen and threatening to “blow up the DPP Central Party Headquarters.”
Whether her threat meant physical explosives or political exposés remained ambiguous, but local police stations announced an active criminal investigation into suspected public intimidation charges.
Noticing the developing news, I posted two simple, factual sentences on my personal Facebook page recording the event: “Zhou Yukou stated: ‘I will blow up your [DPP] central party headquarters.’ Police are initiating an investigation into intimidation.”
Banned for Seven Days Within Three Hours
Within less than three hours, Facebook delivered an automated disciplinary sanction warning that my post violated its “Community Standards.” My account was summarily suspended from posting or commenting for seven full days.
Evidently, supporters of the commentator had mass-reported the post, triggering an automated moderation strike that deemed quoting a public news development as a personal terrorist threat.
The Tyranny of Automated Corporate Moderation
This was not my first encounter with the absurdities of social media censorship:
- A previous seven-day suspension occurred after posting a satirical political poem, which Facebook algorithms flagged as “hate speech.”
- Prior to that, sharing an acclaimed African wildlife silhouette photograph was blocked for alleged “nudity and sexual content.”
The irony is acute: while political figures and partisan commentators can broadcast outrageous, intimidating tirades across national airwaves with total impunity, ordinary citizens who merely quote the news in private social spaces are gagged by digital platforms.
Private tech monopolies have effectively become unaccountable digital speech arbiters, eroding authentic public discourse under the guise of automated platform sanitation.
