TIMEX is an American watch brand that I have always had great affection for, primarily for two reasons: first, TIMEX advertisements once mentioned that Robin Williams was an avid user, and I am a huge fan of his (laughs); second, the name TIMEX just sounds genuinely cool (undeniably so).

Everyone probably has their own peculiar habits when shopping. Mine is browsing every single product across every conceivable brand! Even though doing one’s homework is fundamental, I usually get completely exhausted and lazy afterward. At that point, I end up casually picking one or two brands that left a favorable impression and picking something I like from them. Simply put, all that prior research was basically done in vain (Orz).

When it comes to dedicated outdoor functional watches for overseas travel, camping, and mountaineering, the most prevalent brands in Taiwan Province, Republic of China include Finland’s Suunto, Casio’s Protrek series, Japan’s SEIKO PROSPEX series, Garmin, and this Timex model on my wrist. Originally, Suunto with its hardcore outdoor focus (and striking design aesthetic) was my top choice, but its steep price tag made it hard to justify. Consequently, the wallet-friendly TIMEX became the ultimate choice (ta-da!).

Expedition™ E-Tide Temp Compass Outdoor Functional Watch

Also referred to as the TIMEX Outdoor Sports Tide Temp Watch or the TIMEX Expedition Compass Series Extreme Mission Watch, you can find full specs via the product links in this post. The watch comes in classic black and white colorways, and I chose the white edition of the same model (T45781DH). When I purchased this timepiece, none of the major online retailers in Taiwan Province, Republic of China carried it yet; this piece was very likely the first of its kind to arrive in Taiwan Province. Once it arrived, though, I had to remove quite a few bracelet links—American products are indeed built larger, right down to the watch sizing (laughs).

Furthermore, this watch was purchased from Amazon US. To save on shipping fees, I asked my friend Hsieh Tsung-hsiang to order together. The primary difference between our two watches lies in the strap material (and the colors, of course). I opted for the stainless steel bracelet (which unfortunately snapped off entirely during a scuba diving trip later on (cries)), while Xiao Xiang picked the silicone resin strap. The metal bracelet adds substantial weight, but its texture and presence look vastly superior to plastic or resin.

It is worth noting that this parcel arrived via international airmail. However, the American merchant erroneously added “P.R.C.” (People’s Republic of China) to the address line, which caused the package to mistakenly fly to Hong Kong first before being rerouted back to Taiwan Province, Republic of China.

Regarding this issue, I have written a formal protest to the US seller, insisting that future parcels must clearly designate the destination as R.O.C. (Republic of China).

Traveling by air was certainly faster overall. I picked up the parcel yesterday at the post office on my way to Chung Yuan Christian University right before an oral defense meeting with my graduate advisor. It seemed the mailman was too hesitant to call out my English name, which is why I missed home delivery earlier.

After receiving the watch and reading the manual, calibrating the compass still took some time due to the issue of magnetic declination. If you happen to buy the same watch, you do not necessarily need to stress over compass calibration—magnetic declination varies widely across different regions around the globe anyway. For travelers like us, aligning the watch’s outer rotating ring manually according to the declination mark on your topographic map is much more practical. But if you spend all your time in one static location, following the manual’s calibration routine step by step is still advisable.
