Spend enough time navigating the currents of social media, and the unvarnished realities of human nature gradually come into sharp focus. Today, I want to unpack one particularly pervasive archetype: the anatomy of the deeply self-absorbed.
To manipulate discourse and exert psychological leverage, certain people possess an innate habit of inflating trivial matters beyond all proportion. Even when a conversation begins around something as ordinary as an apple, they will inevitably drag the discussion to the outer edges of the universe. By the time you catch your breath, that humble apple has vanished entirely beneath an imaginary cosmic explosion.
Yet observe what happens when such an individual encounters an incisive counterpoint—an observation precise enough to pierce the armor of their fragile vanity. Their posture undergoes a swift inversion: they immediately pivot from cosmic grandiosity to vitriolic condescension.
Even though you are still quietly discussing an apple, they will paint you as a malevolent galactic monster threatening civilization. Their self-proclaimed “noble crusade” becomes rallying the collective internet to unleash a crusade against you. Meanwhile, where do they reside during this high-minded battle? Curled comfortably on an old apartment sofa, sipping an iced beverage, quietly marveling at the theater of manufactured outrage they have orchestrated.
Such personalities are far from rare. They have never harbored genuine care for constructive ideals, let alone guiding a community toward mutual flourishing. They are animated by a single, desperate imperative: “Anyone who poses even a fleeting threat to their fragile interior ego is immediately cast as a mortal enemy.”
And against perceived enemies, they are willing to mobilize every ounce of social capital and linguistic vitriol at their disposal.
Yet what these individuals describe as their “formidable resources” usually amounts to little more than a splash of dark, murky ink. Hurling it outward to plunge the surrounding discourse into darkness leaves them with a hollow sense of triumph. Once the manufactured storm clears, all that remains beneath the mask is an impoverished, pitiful vanity.
