When you find a person standing in front of the automated teller machine (ATM) at a convenience store or bank, furiously raging at the ATM, even resorting to violence against it, then either they entered the wrong password three times and had their card swallowed[1], their deposit was taken by a runaway lover, or else it was an unexplained operation failure.

Thanks to technological progress, even after a failed operation, the bank ATM will list the reason as a digitized error code on the receipt, allowing us to make a simple judgment of the cause of the error.

Because the explanation of the operation error may be very long, in order to effectively simplify the information on the receipt and facilitate processing by the bank’s terminal system, the error reason we see on the receipt is a string of error codes, including two types: financial error codes and ATM error codes, used to explain the cause of the operation error.

For example, if you enter the wrong password three times, the ATM error code you see on the receipt will be “R 2203,” and the actual error reason is: “IC card password error exceeds three times.”

For everyone’s convenience, I have reorganized the bank ATM error codes into the table below. You can look up the table by the number column of the error code, or press “Ctrl + F” on the keyboard to search for the code.
