This article is a short piece I wrote in December of ROC Year 99, submitted to the “Writing Is Storytelling” essay contest organized by United Literature. The topic was “If I Were a Bird,” and this piece won an Encouragement Award.

”If I Were a Bird”

“So hard — watch me!”

“Wah, I’m hungry, I want to eat.”

“Dad, Mom, you’re back — I’m so happy.”

“The silvery-white scene outside is so beautiful, and Mom’s wings are so warm.”

“Wow, so high! Can I really jump down?”

“Ah~~~ I can fly, I can fly! Dad, Mom, look quick!”

“Dad, Mom, I’m planning to leave home next week. I don’t know when I’ll be able to come back. Please both take good care of your health.”

“Are those creatures down there humans?”

“Ah!!! Everyone run!!!”

“Hello, I’m………, you’re beautiful.”

“Look — the dance of life I will offer you is so magnificent.”

“This is a treasure I caught specially for you — do you like it?”

“I’m so happy, I’m so blessed, thank you for being here.”

“Should we… build a nest together…?”

“Look quick — the little lives inside the shells are throwing a tantrum.”

“It’s getting cold. You stay in the nest and add some warmth for our children; I’ll go out and see if there’s anything to bring back.”

“Child, look — a worm has appeared over there, quick!”

“Day after day passes, gradually slipping away. Old companion, look — how are our children doing now?”

“I think so too. After all, he’s my dearest child. I believe he too will have a life journey worth being proud of.”

“Thank you, thank you our children, thank you this world.”

“It’s getting dark.”
