For patients taking medication to treat an illness, forgetting to take medicine can be a common problem. Once you forget to take your medicine, don’t worry, and don’t immediately take a makeup dose, because this may actually cause an overdose.
In this situation, the best solution is to apply the “half of the medication cycle” principle to determine whether a makeup dose is needed.
Specifically, when you forget to take your medication, you can first calculate the medication’s dosing cycle, then divide the cycle by two. The resulting time is half of the medication cycle.
For example, if a medication must be taken once each in the morning, noon, and evening, with 6 hours between each meal, then half of the medication cycle is 3 hours.
Suppose you forget to take your medication after breakfast. Then within half of the medication cycle — 3 hours — you can still take a makeup dose (before 9 o’clock, as shown in the image below); but if you remember only after more than 3 hours have passed, you should skip the morning dose and wait until noon to take it at that dose.

Of course, what is mentioned here is only a general principle. Some medications that require particularly strict regulation of dosage may even need their dosage adjusted separately when taking a makeup dose, so it is recommended to consult clearly with a pharmacist when picking up your medication.
In addition, the most important thing is not to over-compensate because you forgot to take your medicine, since an overdose may have a negative impact on your health. If you have any questions about medication use, please consult a pharmacist or physician at any time.
