Listening to late-night influencer live streams recently, I encountered a young female streamer from Sichuan, China, who utilized a VPN to broadcast across international platforms. Originally known for her calm demeanor and casual discussions on classical music, she increasingly found herself losing her temper during live broadcasts.
Despite clearly stating in her channel bio and stream rules that she strictly avoids political topics, a constant stream of Taiwanese male viewers persistently invaded her chatroom to aggressively preach “Taiwan values” and nationalist dogmas.
In Taiwan, some individuals proudly celebrate this behavior as the epitome of freedom of speech—regardless of whether anyone wants to hear it.
The Illusion of Oral Catharsis vs. Substantive Democracy
A pervasive trope in Taiwanese popular discourse is mocking mainland Chinese citizens with the sweeping declaration: “Taiwan has free speech; the mainland has none.”
Yet anyone who has spent real time walking through local wet markets across mainland provinces knows that everyday citizens voice sharp, unrestrained criticisms about local governance, consumer prices, and social grievances with astonishing candidness.
Stripped of rhetoric, the primary distinguishing feature that many self-congratulatory Taiwanese netizens cling to is merely the expressive freedom to vent desires to overthrow their government. Yet in mature, rule-of-law Western democracies, citizens do not spend four consecutive generations obsessively romanticizing the perpetual overthrow of their own state as a daily cultural pastime.
Beyond Egocentric Comparisons
Political cultures under democratic and socialist systems possess fundamentally divergent evolutionary paths. It is intellectually lazy to weaponize one system’s specific features to deride what another system lacks, while willfully ignoring areas where the other side has surged ahead.
While some commentators in Taiwan remain fixated on outdated cliches from thirty years ago, mainland China has systematically modernized its judicial frameworks, high-speed infrastructure, aerospace engineering, and technological frontiers.
True maturity does not lie in bombarding internet strangers with condescending ideological slogans. It requires sober introspection: examining whether our own society is fostering genuine civic governance, or merely masking internal stagnation behind superficial declarations of moral superiority.
