“The abundant existence of foolish human beings is precisely what makes genuine wisdom so precious.”
Years ago, an old friend struggling with the bureaucratic absurdity and petty corporate politics of a large enterprise asked for my perspective.
I offered her that single sentence. It was enough to bring a smile back to her face and allow her to continue working diligently—even if my answer carried a slight touch of pragmatic flippancy.
In recent years, traditional quiet integrity has eroded. Simply uttering words like “hero,” “manly,” or traditional familial terms risks immediate public outrage, swiftly denounced by activist mobs as gender discrimination.
This populist culture of pervasive behavioral policing forces individuals possessing genuine wisdom to withdraw into quiet self-cultivation. To speak out is to invite an onslaught of faceless hostility hiding behind digital screens. Meanwhile, the gullible masses drift aimlessly, succumbing to the personality cults of those who master digital packaging—sensationalist influencers, political commentators, and performative pundits.
These self-styled spiritual guides constantly reconfigure their public personas to chase algorithmic engagement. They cater deftly to the anxieties of the digital generation, using comforting platitudes or manufacturing shared grievances to fill the void within insecure minds.
Consider a prominent online celebrity attorney who frequently published viral advice on romance and social justice, only to be exposed as an unrepentant emotional predator in his personal life. After media scrutiny broke, he simply retreated into temporary silence before staging an unashamed comeback. His followers quickly embraced him once again—or more accurately, they never genuinely cared about integrity to begin with.
Truth, objective virtue, and moral consistency matter little to those whose primary concern is satisfying emotional voids. Lower tiers of consciousness invariably prioritize immediate emotional gratification above foundational principles.
Yet the timeless principles of human decency and authentic truth remain unchanged. Loud arrogance detached from reality only persists until reality personally confronts the arrogant.
A fierce proponent of capital punishment abolition abruptly fell silent after her young daughter was brutally murdered.
A loyal fan who defended the aforementioned celebrity attorney ceased her praise only after discovering she had personally become his latest victim.
Generations past quoted ancient philosophers and sages, drawing upon millennia of recorded human experience to parse complex moral dilemmas. Today, online discourse is dominated by “as influencer so-and-so declared.” As institutional educational policy dilutes classical literature, historical depth, and cultural roots, civil society displays alarming symptoms of systemic intellectual decline.
People remember few words of ancient sages, yet hang entranced upon the vacuous commentary of internet personalities who are no smarter than themselves.
Every few years, society recycles manufactured debates of zero intrinsic intellectual substance: whether escalators should prohibit single-side standing, or whether public transit priority seating should be abolished. Are all these heated commentators mechanical escalator engineers? Why do trivial technical questions suddenly become national obsessions?
The recurring uproar surrounding public transit priority seating is equally absurd. I once observed an internet commenter declaring that senior citizens were actively obstructing world progress. True obstruction of human progress is foolishness itself—particularly the bigotry that demonizes an entire demographic based on isolated individual encounters.
The fundamental root of this declining societal intellect lies in modern humanity losing the discipline of pursuing principled, transcendent ideals. Stripped of internal purpose, people obsess over concrete symbols of wealth and chase illusory digital clout, desperately attempting to mask the inner emptiness within their souls.
With deeper reflection over time, I would append a crucial second clause to the advice I gave my friend years ago:
“Even if that person is merely a very well-rehearsed fool.”
And that marks another familiar transformation from an innocent youth into a worldly realist.
