A stationery addict is never made in a day! I don’t know when it started, but “fountain pens” and “carbon pens” — two kinds of pens that aren’t even easy to find in stationery stores — began to catch my eye more than ballpoint pens, rollerballs or mechanical pencils.

When I was a kid, my family wasn’t short of food or clothing, but we weren’t wealthy either. It was almost impossible to have the chance to use stationery of the fountain-pen tier, let alone spend my own money to buy one.

Rather, the most memorable encounter I had with fountain pens as a child was limited to the scene in the Doraemon manga where Nobita breaks his father’s fountain pen and gets scolded.

A few years ago, PILOT sold a round, chubby, cute fountain pen called the “Genki mini fountain pen,” which was cheap and easy to use. The only pity was that, due to poor precision, the ink flow and degree of feathering were relatively hard to control — you could call it a rugged style.

I feel the correct name for a fountain pen should really be “dip (ink) pen.”

In English, the word for fountain pen is only “Fountain Pen,” and in early classifications, fountain pens were also regarded as today’s ballpoint pens. I guess that as world technology evolved, these names with different design concepts were automatically differentiated. After all, you can’t call today’s refillable dip (ink) pen a “refillable dip (ink) pen” — such a name would be far too long-winded.

This time, on a whim, I unexpectedly bought a relatively inexpensive LAMY fountain pen with a well-received user experience, as my first proper fountain pen in life (the Genki mini fountain pen, after all, can only be a toy).

The Lamy Safari 2007 white limited edition uses an ABS body, which is unexpectedly more durable than the same brand’s mid-to-high-priced fountain pens. Also, among a series of richly colored exteriors, I specially chose my favorite white — though the special cherry-blossom pink is also very pretty, and I might buy one for my niece on her birthday.

With a built-in “F” nib, it really writes more smoothly than the Genki mini fountain pen, and its exquisite ink output makes me regard it as one of my favorite pens — at a cheap price, no need to use it with constant care.

Although the more frequently you use an ink pen, the more ink it consumes, whether you’re being creative, drawing design drafts or taking notes, presenting through a fountain pen always makes you feel that inspiration in your mind can flow endlessly. Of course, unconsciously practicing various signatures has also made my name more and more beautiful.
