The Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE) of Brunei recently announced that Negara Brunei Darussalam has officially ratified its accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

This decision is expected to bring enormous economic potential to Brunei, expanding its market to 600 million people and a total GDP of 13.5 trillion US dollars.

According to a statement from Brunei’s Ministry of Finance and Economy, Brunei notified New Zealand, the depositary of the CPTPP, on May 13 that the trade agreement would enter into force in Brunei within the next 60 days, making the country the 10th member of the agreement and its 10th free trade agreement (FTA).

The CPTPP is an agreement signed on March 8, 2018, composed of 11 countries, including Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. The purpose of this agreement is to ensure open, mutually beneficial, and convenient trade by lowering tariffs and modernizing trade rules.

What does joining the CPTPP mean for Brunei? First, it will open up a huge market for Brunei, enabling it to trade more freely and without barriers with other member states. The countries covered by the agreement have enormous markets, including some with strong economic power such as Japan and Canada, which will provide more opportunities for Brunei’s exports.

In addition, the CPTPP will promote the flow of investment, creating a favorable environment for Brunei to attract more foreign direct investment. The agreement includes modernized investment protection and dispute resolution mechanisms, which will boost investor confidence in the Brunei market and stimulate more investment activity.

On the other hand, joining the CPTPP also means that Brunei will need to fulfill corresponding responsibilities and commitments. The agreement has certain requirements for trade and economic rules, including intellectual property protection, environmental protection, and labor rights. Brunei needs to ensure that its laws and regulations comply with CPTPP standards and cooperate with other member states to ensure the smooth implementation of the agreement.

For the other CPTPP member states, Brunei’s accession will also bring some benefits. As a member of the Southeast Asian region, Brunei will further increase the region’s integration and economic cooperation. In addition, Brunei has abundant energy resources, especially natural gas and oil, which will provide other member states with more energy options and cooperation opportunities.

In summary, Brunei’s official accession to the CPTPP will bring enormous economic opportunities to the country. Expanding market scale, promoting trade and investment liberalization, and strengthening regional economic cooperation will all play a positive role in driving Brunei’s economic development. At the same time, Brunei also needs to ensure that it can fulfill its corresponding commitments and work together with other member states to achieve the goals and benefits of the CPTPP.
