The Directorate-General of Personnel Administration of the Executive Yuan of the ROC announced the ROC year 106 (2017) administrative agency office calendar, with a total of 116 holidays, the same as year 105, but only 6 consecutive holidays of 3 days or more, one fewer than last year, and the spring break is only 6 days, a full 3 holidays fewer.

There are 6 consecutive holidays of 3 days or more: the ROC Founding Memorial Day and New Year’s Day (3 days total), Lunar New Year’s Eve and Spring Festival (6 days total), Peace Memorial Day (4 days), Children’s Day and National Tomb-Sweeping Day (4 days), Dragon Boat Festival (4 days), and National Day (4 days); this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival falls on a Wednesday, so there will be no flexible day off as last year[3].

The editor suggests everyone arrange this year’s consecutive holiday travel as early as possible, otherwise buying tickets at the last minute is as hard as reaching the sky, and in the end you can only watch others travel everywhere on Facebook! I hope everyone can make good use of these consecutive holidays for various commemorative days and festivals, allowing yourself to enjoy life more amid the tight, busy work.

The scenery of a day off is always especially fresh.

ROC Year 106 (2017) Consecutive Holiday Schedule for Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu Regions:

  1. Founding Memorial Day and New Year’s Day (New Year’s Eve countdown): December 31, 2016 to January 2, 2017, 3 days total.
  2. Lunar New Year’s Eve and Spring Festival (Lunar New Year): January 27 to February 1, 2017, 6 days total.[4]
  3. 228 Peace Memorial Day: February 25 to February 29, 2017, 3 days total.[5]
  4. Children’s Day and National Tomb-Sweeping Day (Qingming Festival): April 1 to April 4, 2017, 4 days total.
  5. Dragon Boat Festival (lunar May 5): May 27 to May 30, 2017, 4 days total.[6]
  6. National Day Memorial Day: October 7 to October 10, 2017, 4 days total.[7]

The editor finally reminds everyone that this holiday schedule is based on the official civil servant annual calendar, and only schedules make-up days off for “commemorative days” and “major folk festivals.” For example, 2016’s Labor Day (May 1) happened to be a Sunday, so there was no make-up day off. Therefore, the actual holiday schedule should still be based on each company’s schedule!

  1. According to Article 5, Paragraph 2, Subparagraph 1 of the “Implementation Measures for Commemorative Days and Festivals,” Children’s Day and National Tomb-Sweeping Day each have one day off; when both fall on the same day, the day before is taken off. The same measures’ Article 5-1 also stipulate that when a day off for a commemorative day or festival falls on a regular day off, a make-up day off shall be given.
  2. If the regular day off is Saturday, the make-up day off is on the previous workday; if Sunday, on the next workday. However, when Lunar New Year’s Eve and Spring Festival days off fall on regular days off, the make-up day off is on the next workday.
  3. Furthermore, according to Articles 4 and 5 of the “Directions for Adjusting Workdays of Government Agencies” (hereafter the Directions), when a commemorative day or festival day off falls on a Thursday, it shall uniformly be adjusted to a day off, and except in special circumstances, a make-up workday shall be held on the Saturday of the previous week.
  4. Because the first and second days of the Spring Festival fall on Saturday and Sunday, make-up days off are given on January 31 (Tuesday) and February 1 (Wednesday).
  5. Because Peace Memorial Day (February 28) falls on a Tuesday, February 27 (Monday) is adjusted to a day off, and a make-up workday is held on February 18 (Saturday).
  6. Because the Dragon Boat Festival (May 30) falls on a Tuesday, May 29 (Monday) is adjusted to a day off. Also, according to Article 5 of the Directions, the make-up workday should originally be on the Saturday of the previous week (May 20), but considering that May 20 coincides with the 106-year junior high school education examination, holding a make-up workday on that day might affect the rights of more than 270,000 examinees and parents nationwide regarding transportation and accompanying care, so the Dragon Boat Festival consecutive holiday’s make-up workday is held on the Saturday of the following week (June 3).
  7. Because National Day (October 10) falls on a Tuesday, October 9 (Monday) is adjusted to a day off, and a make-up workday is held on September 30 (Saturday).
