Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area is located in Datong Township and Nan’ao Township of Yilan County. At an elevation of 1,950 meters, Taipingshan is a primeval forest resort in northern Taiwan — a summer retreat and a winter snow-viewing destination. In particular, the Bong Bong Train, which links several national trails in the Taipingshan area, once carried loggers during the Japanese colonial era and in recent years has been converted for tourism, becoming a rare and unique recreational attraction in Taiwan.
The Bong Bong Train carries tourists through the Taipingshan forest and schedules several maintenance days each year during which it does not operate. Travelers hoping to ride it should avoid those dates, lest they drive all the way to Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area only to be disappointed.
