Health authorities in Brunei issued a public warning after laboratory tests revealed that several weight-loss supplements circulating in Southeast Asian markets—including Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia—contain sibutramine, an internationally banned pharmaceutical ingredient. The flagged products include “MagBlue Habbatus Sauda 100% Asli” and “Jamu Herba Kampong Ramuan Asli Turun Temurun.”
Sibutramine (chemical formula: C17H26ClN), originally developed by Abbott Laboratories, is a centrally acting appetite suppressant. Structurally related to amphetamines (chemical formula: C₆H₅CH₂CH(CH₃)NH₂), it reduces appetite and accelerates weight loss, making it a frequent adulterant in illicit slimming formulations.
However, due to severe adverse cardiovascular outcomes, regulatory agencies across the globe—including the United States, China, the United Kingdom, and the European Union—withdrew sibutramine from markets and banned its use. Long-term consumption of products tainted with sibutramine poses major health risks, such as heightened incidence of myocardial infarction, strokes, elevated blood pressure, paresthesia, insomnia, and irreversible kidney damage.
The Ministry of Health of Brunei emphasized that neither of the two products had ever been approved for import or sale, rendering their distribution illegal. Consumers currently in possession of these supplements are urged to immediately discontinue use and seek medical attention if they experience any adverse symptoms.
In recent years, cross-border migration, international travel, and e-commerce have made Southeast Asian health supplements more readily accessible in Taiwan and abroad. Consumers should exercise extreme vigilance when purchasing over-the-counter slimming products or herbal supplements that promise effortless weight loss, as such items frequently conceal hazardous adulterants that jeopardize long-term health.
