In August of the 111th year of the Republic of China (2022), many new regulations took effect. Among them, in order to reduce the probability of traffic accident injuries, in addition to the previously implemented seat belt requirement for small vehicles, an additional article was added to Article 31 of the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act.

When large vehicles (Note 1) travel on national highways and expressways, all passengers aged 4 and above must wear seat belts, or face a fine of up to NT$6,000.

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications of the Executive Yuan of the Republic of China stated that from August to the end of November is a promotional period, and after December there will be no more verbal warnings — fines will be officially issued!

If the regulation is violated, professional drivers may be fined NT$3,000–6,000. However, if the driver has fulfilled the duty to inform and the passenger still fails to comply with the seat belt requirement, the passenger will instead be penalized with a fine of NT$3,000–4,500.

Notes

  1. Large vehicles include buses, taxis, and rental cars with hired drivers (such as Uber) and other professional vehicle types.
