A single Gmail account can actually be multiplied into an infinite number of functional email addresses. This is a powerful yet underutilized built-in capability that makes email triage and digital privacy management effortless.

Taking my own mailbox as an example: if your primary address is [email protected], you can insert a plus sign + followed by any keyword directly before the @ symbol, transforming it into [email protected].

For instance, you could register on social media using [email protected] or subscribe to newsletters using [email protected]. Any messages dispatched to these customized alias addresses are routed automatically and instantly into your primary inbox. You do not need to register separate accounts, configure complex mail servers, or manage multiple passwords.

Where does this trick shine brightest? Tracking spam and detecting unauthorized data sharing.

The moment unsolicited marketing emails, promotions, or spam start flooding in, inspect the specific “To:” header address. If spam arrives at [email protected], you immediately know with mathematical certainty which platform or merchant leaked or sold your contact information.

From there, creating a simple Gmail filter allows you to automatically archive, label, or delete all future emails sent to that compromised alias with a single click.

I recently brought this up in casual conversation and realized surprisingly few people take advantage of it. Hopefully, this little productivity tip helps you regain control over your inbox and digital footprint.
