Since the garbage truck collection time here at my old home is around 6:30 p.m., which happens to coincide with the usual dinner time, I always make a special effort to avoid having a panda delivery rider arrive at exactly the same time when I order delivery through FoodPanda or UberEats. After all, taking out the trash while receiving food is really quite off-putting.
Last night, as usual, while I was waiting for the garbage truck at the door, I suddenly saw a pink FoodPanda delivery rider park right next to my old home, and not far away at the intersection, Beethoven’s Für Elise happened to start playing. I thought to myself, which family is so unlucky as to have ordered food at this time.
Everyone who has lived on the island of Taiwan for years can probably imagine that a 150cc heavy scooter is already quite large, and with the width of a FoodPanda delivery box on top, each delivery scooter is actually quite bulky.
Unfortunately, the street in front of my home is a traditional old street. Its arcade is only wide enough to fit a large truck, and even a person trying to squeeze past on the side would find it too narrow. So after he parked his scooter at the side of the road, there was not much space left for the garbage truck to pass.
I remember once before, when I called an Uber and a luxury car arrived, the driver even drove into the street and, after a short while, was so scared that he bit his hand and directly reversed out. I only spotted a guy reversing in the distance and specially walked a good distance to catch up with him. When I reached his car, he was still stuck in the awkward situation of not knowing how to turn around and reverse — later I found that my customer rating on the Uber app had been docked 0.1 points (facepalm).
In a scene where the street was very narrow and the delivery rider had casually parked his scooter at the side of the road, blocking the road, a neighbor saw it and specially reminded him to move his scooter so the garbage truck could pass.
But for some reason, this panda delivery rider, using his loud voice, told the neighbor: “It’s fine, this is their job. If they can’t get through, they might as well quit.”
As a few awkward crows 🐦⬛ flew over my head and the neighbor’s, the next scene was completely unsurprising: the garbage truck indeed got stuck next to his scooter and could only adjust its angle again and again at a very slow speed.
Perhaps the delivery rider finally realized that the remaining width of the arcade really was not quite enough for the garbage truck to pass, so he finally reluctantly pulled his scooter diagonally toward the wall a short distance, allowing the garbage truck to finally pass smoothly.
However, as he pulled his scooter, as if to save some face, he loudly taunted the garbage truck: “Don’t be so gutless. Your skills are so lousy and you still dare to come out.” 🐦⬛🐦⬛🐦⬛
And then the next scene was simply too painful to watch, because just after the garbage truck left, do not forget that a recycling truck follows behind. The delivery rider kept pulling his scooter, waiting for one truck after another. If I were thick-skinned enough, I might even have wanted to go ask him how big the shadow in his heart was.
Actually, we have lived on this street for quite some time and have long experienced several similar scenes. We all know that even one extra parked scooter makes it hard for the garbage truck to pass, which is why the neighbor kindly reminded him. Unfortunately, many people lack the ability to anticipate their environment and always think nothing matters, which ultimately leaves the situation stuck in an awkward scene that takes several times the effort to resolve.
