A fire broke out in the early hours of the 14th in Chengzhongcheng, Yancheng District, Kaohsiung, with 46 dead and 41 injured so far. As rescue operations continue to go deeper, the casualty count may rise further; this blaze has become the second-largest mass-casualty fire in the history of the Republic of China during peacetime on the island of Taiwan.
This deadly night fire drew intense attention from foreign media such as NHK, Reuters, and Agence France-Presse, while CNN and BBC even ran the news on their front pages. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai also led the heads of relevant departments at around 6 p.m. to bow twice at a 90-degree angle in apology.
In this sorrowful event, I offer only this image to mourn all the innocent victims who perished in suffering.
