The Central News Agency (CNA) is the national news agency of the Republic of China (ROC). As a statutory public media corporation, the agency carries a core institutional responsibility to maintain journalistic objectivity, political neutrality, and professional integrity when disseminating state and international affairs.
Recently, however, a controversy erupted when an editor operating CNA’s official social media channel published an unprofessional, partisan remark mocking presidential candidate and Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu: “Han Kuo-yu sincerely talking nonsense…”
The overtly biased phrasing immediately ignited fierce criticism across the political spectrum, sparking heated debate regarding whether public news institutions subsidized by taxpayers were compromising journalistic impartiality.
In response, CNA promptly retracted the post and released an official clarification and apology statement:
“Regarding the inappropriate personal remark mistakenly posted to our official fan page by an editorial staff member, the Central News Agency expresses deep regret and offers our sincere apologies to Mayor Han Kuo-yu and the public. The agency will immediately refer the responsible personnel to the disciplinary committee for investigation and review internal editorial review safeguards to ensure rigorous neutrality across all public channels.”
Journalistic Reflection
In today’s digital media ecosystem, social media editors frequently employ informal, sensationalist language to drive engagement metrics. However, when official national news agencies mimic partisan content farms, they inflict severe damage upon their hard-won credibility. Preserving strict nonpartisan boundaries and professional discipline remains essential for public news organizations.
