At a United States Customs auction, a large lot of seized and forfeited bicycles was placed on the auction block. As bidding commenced, a young boy roughly ten years old initiated the opening bid on every single bicycle: “Five dollars!”

Each time, however, other bidders inevitably drove the price up to thirty or forty dollars, leaving the boy to watch helplessly as bicycle after bicycle was claimed by others.

During an intermission, the auctioneer stepped down from the podium and approached the young boy, asking gently why he didn’t bid higher amounts.

“I only have five dollars in the world, sir,” the boy replied softly with quiet hesitation.

When bidding resumed, the boy faithfully repeated his ritual. On every lot, his clear voice called out the opening bid: “Five dollars!” Naturally, older competitors continued to outbid him.

Gradually, the crowd in the auction hall began noticing this persistent young boy who was always the first to bid. An increasing number of attendees found themselves watching the outcome with genuine empathy.

Toward the end of the auction, only one final bicycle remained. It was undeniably the crown jewel of the entire inventory: sparkling like new, equipped with precision multi-gear derailleur shifts, dual handbrakes, a handlebar speedometer, and a night-riding generator dynamo lighting system.

The auctioneer placed the magnificent bicycle onto the stage: “Who will open the bidding?”

The young boy stood straight, his voice trembling slightly with fading hope: “Five dollars!”

In that moment, an absolute hush fell over the entire hall. Everyone turned their eyes toward the little boy. Nobody made a sound. Nobody raised a bidding paddle. Nobody uttered another offer.

After calling “Going once… going twice… going three times…”, the auctioneer smiled broadly and declared loudly: “Sold to the young gentleman in the shorts and white sneakers for five dollars!”

The entire room erupted in thunderous applause.

Cheering with joy, the boy proudly held up his crumpled five-dollar bill, claiming what was unquestionably the most beautiful bicycle in the world with the brightest, most unforgettable smile anyone had ever witnessed.

In our lives, beyond competing to win, outperform, and surpass others, we can also choose to be the person who helps fulfill another’s dream—and in doing so, discover the most magnificent view along the journey.
