Native English speakers with a high level of education generally recognize around 15,000 words. Junior high school students in our country only need to memorize 1,200 words to meet the demands of entrance exams, while 3,000 words are enough to handle everyday life and workplace English conversation, and to freely read 90% of English newspapers and magazines.
Although some people say that memorizing vocabulary is useless, they may be half right — but that only applies once you have already memorized more than 5,000 words. Expanding your vocabulary is always the fastest way to learn English; only afterward does the question of how to become more familiar with those words arise. How to memorize them, however, is a whole other discipline.
In my own process of learning English, I found that memorizing vocabulary directly is the most effective method. But rather than spending time memorizing a huge pile of random words, it is better to memorize the 3,000 most commonly used words; other new words can then be learned naturally through context, asking questions, or looking them up in a dictionary.
In the following 26 articles, we will list the commonly used words beginning with each letter from A to Z.
It is even better if you can print them on A4 paper: cross out the words you already know, keep the ones you do not, and then repeatedly memorize the new words. In this way, you can efficiently memorize all English vocabulary through systematic learning.
